Question:
How should I handle this situation? Waitress added more to her tip!?
2008-04-27 15:58:27 UTC
I just found out that a waitress at O' Charley's added more to her tip. After checking my receipt and what went through at the bank I noticed that she added more to her tip than what I wrote in. I realize this could have been an accident but I'm still kind of upset. I usually tip very good however this waitress gave extremely poor service. It's only a few dollars that she added but I'm still upset. What would you do in this situation?

I would call the restaurant and speak to the manager. This sort of thing happens more than most people realize. It is especially common in bars and then the waitstaff wonders why people don't tip any better than they do.........

You need to complain to the supervisor of the restaurant. Take the receipt in with you and see the manager personally. They should also have THEIR copy of the receipt in their records to see if it was messed with.

Adding money to a bill without your permission is illegal.

I also suggest not paying the tip using a credit card. Write in the tip blank "None" and put the original total in the final total space. Pay the tip at the table using cash. If you have to pay the tip by credit card, write the amount in both numbers and words (like you do checks).

Keep in mind it could have been a credit card error too. By checking with the restaurant, you can see if perhaps the credit card company screwed up. Either way, I'd tell the credit card company that you aren't accepting those few extra bucks on your card.

I have to agree with everyone. You MUST report it to the credit card company and the manager of the restaurant. Every customer she does that to... add it up. How many customers per shift per week/month/year at a couple of dollars and it could equal thousands of dollars in her pocket. Or, like someone else suggested, it may be a bank error. You won't know for sure unless you have it investigated.

If the waitress indeed changed the amount, she is a thief and must pay for her deed. Depending on how many times she's done this, it could be jail time for her.

If you have your receipt and can prove what you are saying, then I'd take it to the management of the restaurant.

They need to know she is doing this.

If she did it to you, she did it to others.

In the end, her actions will discourage others from going to that restaurant and the manager will appreciate your help, I'm sure.

Bottom line: it's a crime...she's stealing from you.

Protect other patrons and turn her in.

Even without proof, the management will be able to keep a close eye on her in the future.

It's what I'd do, anyway.

I would take the bank receipt to the manager of the restaurant and complain. You have no idea how many other people she has done this to. She doesn't deserve any more than what you gave her. If she wants more money, she should get a different job.

Makes no difference if it was a few dollars or one cent; she stole from you. She gives poor service then steals money from you? You need to go to the restaurant and talk to the mgr in private; this is very serious and you are probably not the only one she is doing this to; and you also need to tell the mgr about her poor service and then say "I do hope she isn't making a regular habit of stealing from all her customers."

That is outrageous; she forged your check! She committed a crime! She needs to pay for what she did.

I would go to the restaurant, talk to the manger about what happened and bring your receipt. This is unacceptable. I mean how many other customers has she done this to.

Speak to the manager. If she does this to lots of customers ,she taking home some good bucks. She is stealing, report her.

That's called stealing.

Call the restaurant manager right away to complain. If he doesn't fire her right away, then call the police.

You need to report her to the manager. If she did it to you she has done it to others also.
