I've been getting numerous emails about an upcoming fundraising event to pay for the costs associated with a acquaintance's funeral. It seems that somehow I'm on the mailing list, although I've never been close with the deceased.
Is this practice becoming more common? From an etiquette point of view, is it appropriate?

I have never heard of a fundraiser for a funeral! That is very strange. I would ignore it if you aren't friends with the deceased.

It is different but are you doing this for someone that has a need, they can not pay for all the cost of a funeral,if they can not afford the cost then it would be a huge blessing to the family and you will be the better for giving. Listen to your heart and follow its leading

It's polite to wait till the guy's dead.
