I don't know if this is a trend or perhaps I'm just an old timer, but lately, when my daughter's friends call the house, I pick up the phone and say "hello.." and the caller will respond by saying "hello?" This drives me bonkers! Is something wrong with me?

When someone answers the telephone with "hello", I always respond "hello or hi" but follow that very quickly with "may I speak with"

I think its just out of respect to say hello back (they are only speaking) and then ask to speak with whom you will like to speak with

answer hello with hello is a natural response. even when you say _____ residence , most people will say hello, is ? there, or hello this is ?. can't be stopped, has to be lived with.
