Question:
Does it make sense for people to clean up after themselves after they make a mess?

I have multiple people that like to sit in the workspace that I work in and they sit there and eat their lunch there and leave food crumbs. Should I be the one cleaning up after them? I did put up a small sign saying please keep tidy. Is it too much to ask to clean up after yourself? Will people be offended when they see that sign?

Yes, it makes sense to clean up after yourself. Especially when you share the space with others. Yes, your sign will offend co-workers, because they are guilty, but don't want to be reminded of what hogs they are. I'd say the best way to handle the situation is to go to either your boss, or to Human Resources and let them handle it. That's what they get paid to do. Then.. if HR or your boss won't handle it the only thing left for you to do is either to accept the situation, or start looking for another job.

Dear Greenburg,

I don't think a small sign is offensive, but it might not be very effective, I'm afraid. There must be a policy in place regarding cleanliness already. I would ask your supervisor about the situation. After all, there are insects and critters that would find the situation attractive.

I think you should clean up your own mess. You shouldn't have to clean up after others. Maybe politely bring it up.

Etiquette you learn at home...........If no etiquette then society will continue to wade in their **** until who knows. There are ,more mindless, careless, unsanitary, irresponsible, lazy, and more young, young adults in this 21st generation than in all the generations prior..
