I'm in my local library right now and since I've been coming I don't know how many times I hear someone's cellphone go off and people are having full-blown conversations. The guy next to me is talking on the phone outloud for me and everyone else to hear what is on his mind.

When I come in I turn my phone on vibrate mode and if I have to take a call I will go outside to talk. I consider it no different than going into a movie theatre. Even in the movies, the same thing seems to happen.

I don't get it.

Socially acceptable? Based on one experience in just one library? I hardly think so.

Look around the library. Are there signs prohibiting that practice?

If not, ask the librarian what is their cellphone usage police.

If there are rules against this practice, then it seems that at that particular library, either the staff ignores enforcing this rule, or, the staff was not aware of that particular situation you witnessed.

If you have a complaint about this, then send a letter or email to the head librarian.

It's not socially acceptible to be chatting, texting, etc, in a library, in a meeting of course, at an important event (you'd get kicked out a fashion show or art exhibit), and definately not at any dinner table!

if the library doesn't have a cellphone policy then you should suggest one, if it does then it's either being wrongly tolerated - one would assume other people would notice - or it's time to ***** that guy out when he hangs up or move to the other side of the room and give him the eye.

Sorry if you happen to be a man.

most of the libraries in my area have rules against using cellphones inside the building. I think its extremely rude to talk on a cell phone in a public area like the movies or certain restaurants.

i know what you mean.

My local library sounds like a friggin subway station, it's so loud. And there are signs all over the place telling people to turn off their cell phones. But the signs are ignored.

Last time i went, a rude jerk was talking loudly and a guy yelled at him to stfu. I applauded. LOL

So basically, you have to yell at people to make them stfu, which is ironic and almost counter-productive, but it proves that people are f-ing jerks.

It's not socially acceptable by any means. It is a failure of the staff to police it. And maybe, that's because they aren't bothered by it- YOU ARE. Rather than asking yahoo questions- why don't you complain to the staff? Have them do something about it- and if they dont- put your complaint in writing. Setting standards and boundaries with bothersome people is the only socially acceptable solution.

That is your library's failure for not implementing a cell phone policy. Our library has signs clearly stating no cell phone use allowed. Failure to abide by the rule and you will be asked to leave.
