Question:
How do I request a day off last minute?

I just got a job, and because they didn't really stress scheduling, I figured that I would have a flexible schedule.

However, I'm only a week into the job, and I find myself requesting days off for church, switched shifts for school, etc.

My family and I have prior commitments to something this Saturday, and I forgot to request off. They had scheduled me for this tuesday and thursday also, but I asked to be out on wednesday and friday instead. They complied.

Would it be rude to ask off, or should I go ahead? Since I got the job, I feel less close to my family as I am always at school, church, or work. I miss my family time, but I need the job for gas and insurance.

By the way, I am one of four hostesses for a nice restuarant.

They are used to juggling schedules, so don't worry about it too much. If it's a problem, they'll let you know.

It might help if you sat down with your schedule for the next month and gave your manager a list of all the days that you are available to work.

Make friends with the other hostesses, because they can cover for you -- and you can cover for them, when something unexpected pops up.

But if Saturday is a busy day, you can't trade days with someone and your manager can't find someone else, then I'm afraid you're probably going to be stuck working and will have to skip your family "commitment" if you want to keep your job.

Welcome to the working world. :-)

Your manager asked you to complete the form requesting - personal time off? so did you. - that appears like all you need to do. - however if you are requesting time off when others have already asked for time off OR it's a super busy period, you would not be APPROVED Why'd you book the flight, if you don't even know if the time off has been approved or not? Funeral leave is called bereavement leave. It is a special situation. The company gives you this time off without reducing your sick or personal time off bucket as a sort of condolence gift.

If you are mature enough to work, go to the job. You sound very young. Maybe you should quit and wait to be mature enough to handle the responsibility . Not fair to the others for you to ask off on a Sat. You are the newbie. If I was the boss and you asked me , I'd just fire you for not being a team player and not having an commitment to the job.

This sounds like a perfect example of miscommunication. Since you didn't tell the restaurant the specific dates you need to have off, they are scheduling you wherever they can. You need to tell them about one to two weeks prior what your commitments are. Once the schedule has been made, you need to be able to commit to what you've said you can do. The word for that is integrity. It's a great attribute.

Yes, ask the other hostesses to cover for you, you can owe them if they are in atight spot in the future.

btw, that's what working is about. If you want to have cash in your pocket you need to sacrifice some things. It's hard but you can't have your cake and eat it too. You don't want to seem like an unreliable employee so just tough it out.

You beg and you plead and you try and make a deal...but I would be prepared in all likelihood to have to work. Part of being a responsible working adult is to be mature enough to realize the demands of a job and perform to it.

I would try to find someone to cover for you, they might not give you off since the schedule is already made.
