Question:
How should a newcomer try to influence a Yahoo! group's netiquette?

I'm a member of a Yahoo! group which discusses a topic I'm largely ignorant about. Since I know so little, I've only lurked. Another who's been a member longer than me, seems to be well-respected, and posts regularly, uses a lot of ellipsis (...) instead of periods or a commas, and never correctly to indicate missing words. I find it distracting so I skip over most posts by this author.

Recently, a couple of other members have begun to immitate this annoying misuse of ellipsis. Before now, I found these members both informative and entertaining, so I'm reluctant to ignore them as well.

I know I cannot get over my irritation. I can ignore the people who abuse ellipsis and miss out on what they have to say, but that sucks. Should I email members directly and attempt to correct their punctuation privately? Should I ask the moderator to intercede for me? Should delurk to ask, off-topic, the group to stop with the ellipsis? I imagine negative outcomes for all these options.

None of the above. If it annoys you, don't read it. Just set an example with your own posts.

Since you use the following words: distracting, annoying, irritation, when pointing out someone else's Netiquette habits, & you say you can't get over it, perhaps this site is not for you. Your are not the Netiquette Monitor here & if you have no right to point out someone else's faults, unless you are free of them yourself.
