In general, you don't give thank you cards for bonuses.

If it is part of a bonus program that "everyone" gets, you don't give a thank you card. If it is an "earned" bonus, you also don't need to give a thank you card. If it is something the boss gave out of the generosity of his/her heart (went out of their way to get it for you), then a thank you card is a good idea.

A simple verbal "thank you" is always sufficient.

Ok.... I didnt read all of the other answers.... but in my opinion, it kind of all depends on what kind of company that you work for if you give a bonus. I work for a gymnastics gym and we have only 20-30 employees, I work directly under the owner of the gym everyday. I got a 75 dollar visa gift card for my bonus. It is not a lot, but since I am only part time.... it is more than I make in a day sometimes. I will wirte a not directly to the owner since i know they are the ones that gave me the bonus. But if you work for a big business... where you dont see the owner all the time... i would say it is not necessary since your boss didnt shell out the money for it. I worked for several places where I didnt get even a dime of a bonus... and they were big companies... so you know they could have afforded one. I mean you COULD write one even if you dont see the owner... it would not hurt. A bonus is just that... a bonus. They dont have to give you one, or else it would be in the employee handbook as a benefit. I have never haggled a job offer for a larger christmas bonus. So I disagree that it is an earned thing that is part of your salary, though your boss can write it off as such and it does get tacked on to your paid wages and taxed when you get it. The truth is they could give everyone in the company a bonus except for you and you could do nothing about it. So it is a gift no matter what way you look at it. Do what you think is right.

As a boss - I did not receive a thank you note, my employee thanked me in person. This is enough, but if you feel you want to write a note I don't think it is a bad thing. I only give bonuses if they are deserved - I do not give all employees one. Therefore a note would just reiterate the fact that they know this and are grateful. However in a company where everyone gets a yearly bonus I would say absolutely no to a note - looks like you are sucking up. It is basically your salary and you are not getting any special treatment.

My husband owns his own company and is very hurt when his employees don't recognize his generosity at giving a bonus.

In his company, the Christmas bonus is a gift. Nowhere in the policy manual does it say that he has to give them a bonus. Yes, the bonus is based on the fact that the company did well, but it's not really even based on an individual's performance; all employees got the same amount.

After three years in a row of not one employee even remotely recognizing that the bonus was received (let alone gratitude for it), he is no longer giving them out.

Therefore, I make sure I say something to my boss when I receive my bonus! I certainly don't want to get it taken away.

Yes, most definitely! The size of the bonus should not determine giving your boss a card or not. The simple fact is that your boss did something that they didn't have to. I recommend that you purchase a blank card. Therefore, you can fill it in yourself. This would be the best method because it will say all the things that you feel without it being to cliche and misleading. It should not be a typical "thank you" card because those are not made for bosses. Just simply write inside that you want to thank your boss for recognizing and better compo-sating you for the hard work in which you do. And also for all the great assets that you job brings out of you! It will also make you a shoein the next time your boss gives bonuses.

I would love to have to give my boss a thank you note for a generous bonus at Christmas, unfortunately he doesn't give a Christmas bonus. But I am getting a 12% contribution from him into my retirement fund so i will give him a thank u for thank. Comes out to more that 8 grand and that's pretty generous!

If the taxes were taken out of the bonus, then I would just say a verbal thank you and leave it at that.

If it was a cash or non-taxed bonus, then I would write a card as it obviously came out of someones personal pocket and not the company coffers.

And BethAnn07 makes an excellent point that if employees don't show some appreciation for a bonus (which by definition is not part of regular pay) it could dissapear alltogether...

Congratulations and Happy New Year!

A big NO, not for the sole purpose of the bonus. You can thank the boss verbally for the bonus.

Bonuses are given to all employees, its not something he did especially for you. Its kind of like an office given gift.

If he gives out special gifts above and beyond, then a thank you is in order.

Depends on the situation. In a larger workplace where the bonuses are determined at a corporate level and your boss is only the person giving you the good news, you don't give a thank you note.

I work in a medium sized place where a lot of people get bonuses and my boss has input into "selling" me to upper management for the bonus. I thanked him in person.

In a small family run place, a thank you note would be very appropriate.

While it's not required, if you appreciate your boss and the bonus a simple thank you note is fine. You don't have to tell co-workers or friends that your sending it.

I always send my boss and co- workers holiday cards. And I tend to personalize them. Acknowledging something they did that made my day. Paying forward a sincere compliament.even to a boss is no big deal. I've found that it can brighten a rotten day for them. Because the bottom line is they are human beings.

Do what is comfortable for you.

My college student children sent their professors, staff and upper classmen students who have been really helpful in making their transition to college easier a Christmas card.

You have every right not to sent him a card or say thank you, since he is thanking you with the bonus, but I have learned through the years that a sincere "Thank You" card or word, is always appreciated and it goes a long way. I have thanked people for thanking me for doing something nice for them..I Thank them for their thoughtfulness in appreciating my "Thank You" It never hurts to show your appreciation for whatever reason and everyone loves to hear the words "Thank You". And though your boss gave you the bonus, in most cases he did not have too.. not legally.. So what harm is a "Thank You" to your very boss who holds the very key to your job, it only shows you are a appreciative and nice person..a person that would appreciate a nice raise a promotion or anything else someday..I see No harm in that.

Do what you think is appropriate. If he just gave you a small bonus, or many other people in the office got it, it's probably not worth it. If he did go out of his way to give you the bonus, if could be a nice thing to do.

Have you ever had a waitress give you such good service that not only did you leave her a sizable tip; but you just had to tell her thank you? I have. If you're the kind of person that says thank you and show appreciation, then by all means do so. Keep it simple. That's one of the first things most Parents teach their kids; to say thank you. Remember this: A lot of people last year did not have jobs. Over half of the folks who did have jobs did not get a bonus. You did.

This is a great question- but most of you forgot a set or two of circumstances. What if the company you work for normally gives out a bonus in the form of a gift certificate? What if the company you work for gives out a bonus but it was not discussed in your "pay package" when you got hired? What if they only give out a bonus if they ended the year in the black? What if the company ended the year in the red, but gave a bonus anyway- that would certainly be more of a sacrifice for them, wouldn't it? What if the company is so huge that there are 3,000 people who get a bonus- that would be a lot of thank you notes! Who exactly do you think if you work at a hosptial- The Board, the CEO, the CFO?

yes you do . I always have and in today's market I think it's important to let your employer know you appreciate anything they can do for you. many employee's go without getting anything for Holidays or even year end. And as to the amount of the bonus most bosses don't even make the decision as to who or how much each employee receives. so going with the Holiday spirit I say thank you as a rule to anyone that gives me a gift of any kind... :-)

Depends on your work environment.

If you work for a large corporation, then your boss may not have given you a bonus -- his/her boss, or boss's boss, may have done it. A thank-you note probably isn't appropriate.

However, if your boss is the company owner, a thank-you card might be nice, thanking him for his generosity not only on this holiday, but year-round. Keep it short and friendly.
2007-01-03 15:18:15 UTC
Spirit, it really depends on the dynamics of your place of employment...If it's the everyone for themselves type of environment, that bonus was truly earned by you....if it's a place where you all assist each other when deadlines need to be met, then it would be nice to send your supervisor that "thank you card" discreetly. One way you can weigh your answer is basing it on the personality of your supervisor, if he/she is well liked by you, then the fact of you thinking so highly of them to send them such a note in appreciation of the bonus, big or small...sets you apart from all others because you wanted to send that thank you card...if you said "thank you" in person when you received the bonus then that was sufficient, especially if your supervisor responded with "you are welcome...good job or a job well done." Great question though because you don't want to be a "brown nose" but you do want to show that you have common etiquette and appreciate the bonus...Either way it will be a decision based on the dynamics of your place of employment...Congratulations on that bonus! and be Safe...(smiles)

Personally....

I believe that giving "Thank You Notes" has become so over looked in this modern "Techno" Age.....

Parents don't even teach their children why or how to write, yes I said write a Thank You.....They should always...always...be hand written....

Example....I have taught my children how, why, etc on Thank yous

My youngest son's teacher in 4Th grade organized the class Shabbaton. When he came home Sun. He wrote her a Thank You for organizing the Shabbaton for the class. Wrote & mailed a Thank You to the Parent who's house he stayed at.

Here comes the sad part.....Later that next week I saw the teacher and she informed me how much the Thank You ment to her & that in ALL of her years of teaching this was the 1st Thank You she had EVER gotten!!!!

With the information that I have just given you ~ What do you think you will do?? Remember ~ Nothing says you have to get a bonus!!!
2007-01-03 16:59:50 UTC
If the bonus is something everybody in the company received, then a simple verbal "thank you" is sufficient.

If it is something you got based on merit or some above and beyond the call performance, than not everybody knows about, then chances are, they told you about it when you received it. If that's the case then the time to thank is right then and there.

This totally depends on the situation. I work in a small place with just 6 others, so I am close to my boss. So of course I would say Thank You! But my husband works in a place with 100's, and everyone gets a $100 visa gift card mailed to them... he doesn't even know his boss! If it was given in person, not by mail, say thank you... but other wise, no.

Yes. My bosses (surgeons) are very generous at Christmas (and all but one are Jewish and celebrate Hanukkah instead.) They do vary the cash bonus according to length of service. I would never take this for granted, it is not a required part of my salary, and I have always taken time to find each of the five individually and thank them. They are great guys to work for and I feel that it is only right to acknowledge that (THANKS RK,EM,JP,CM and WG )
2007-01-03 14:49:22 UTC
No I don't. You send a thank you card when someone gives you a present, and the bonus is not a present, is what every employee gets by law. if I want to be thankful, i will simply say it orally, but that is it.

As an employer who gives Christmas Bonuses, I think it would be a nice gesture to send a thank you note. Most of our employees don't even SAY "thank you" for what we give them and it sometimes makes me feel that it is unappreciated. Some sort of acknowledgement would be nice.

At the very least, be sure and personaly say 'thank you" directly to your boss and let him/her know that you appreciate the gesture.

Yes I did. Last year I received a small bonus and sent a thank you email, however this year was sizable so sent a card through the mail.

I don't have day-to-day contact with my boss - strictly through email, so thought the card was the best way to thank him.

That would be a sweet thing to do, specially if he did notice that you worked really good, and for him to really recognise you that you worked hard, why not give him a note saying thank you ''you noticed''. Nothing wrong in it. No employers would ''bonus'' you, if they haven't noticed. Obviously they did, and then c'mon he would notice you more if you just said 'thank you', thats a way to recognize and say thank you for being 'recognized''...good luck. Your thank you note would get you a long way....

I gave my boss a thank you note for my bonus. It was just a simple, elegant card blank card with "Thank you" on the front. I wrote, "Thank you for the oppertunity to provide my skills to the firm. I greatly appreciate your thoughtfulness during the holidays." and signed my name. I work for a small firm, so I thought it would be appropriate, and my boss appreciated the thank you.

The word here is Bonus. It is not a part of your salary, so a nice gesture (that will go a long way) is to absolutly YES send him/her a thank you card. Bonuses are extra!
2007-01-03 12:37:46 UTC
well it sure wouldn't hurt and it can always help out with next years bonus as he will remember who is appreciative and who expected it. a bonus is an extra and he is not required to give it to his employees so saying thank you is a very nice gesture.
2007-01-03 15:55:01 UTC
I would do it in person if I got a christmas bonus....but I didn't - goes to show everyone how it is working in hospitals! No bonuses or awards, in regards to money.
2007-01-03 13:35:06 UTC
You certainly are not required to write him a thank you note, but sending an card of appreciation would shine some light your way. Not only would you come off poised and cordial, you'd be letting your superior know that he is appreciated and you are grateful for the professional relationship you maintain with each other.
2007-01-03 12:47:30 UTC
yes you give a thank you note. little formalities go a long way in business. its like finding out his favorite bagel shop and taking him a couple just beacause "you were in the neighborhood". learn to schmooze or you will be stuck in a cubicle forever like all the morons that say don't send thank you notes to your boss.

2007-01-03 06:21:09 UTC
Well, I might have if the "bonus" I received hadn't been an insult to the time and effort I put in all year. Rather than writing a thank-you note, I updated my resume and started looking for a new job.
2007-01-03 17:23:08 UTC
A verbal "thank you" should be enough, depending on how nice the gift was and whether or not everyone else got a bonus gift, too.

Thank you notes are always good manners. It lets that person know that you appreciated what they did for you and gives them a sense of you having a little more class than the rest of the bunch. You can never go wrong with saying Thank You. It seems that these days that people don't understand what proper etiquette even is. If it is big corp. then I would say no. But if your company is small I would say yes. I don't recieve one and I work for a big company. It is the company's choice to do so. They could forget about you if they feel like it. Your's chose not to. Something along those lines would be appreciated, I believe. Think how it would feel next Christmas and you didn't recieve one. or better yet, think the of the tables reversed. Would you want a thank you note?

Company and employers always hear our complaints and suggestions, but sometimes they like to know that they did something good.

So, I think it's always a good idea to express positive things as well as negative things, in this case, the employer won't get depressed and will continue doing the good things and try to listen more when we complain, because in the end, they are just people like us, they like to hear thank you, and they like to know that they are appriciated.

In the end, I wish you a good like, a "Thank-you" has never been a problem. Three words use them as often as possible without any fear to be misunderstood: "Thank-you", "Sorry" and "Please".

i would agree that a bonus is like a thank-you for your work, so saying thank-you back is somewhat redundant. however, i don't think your boss would analyze this question as much as it is being analyzed now. if you give him/her a thank-you card, he/she will probably think you're very polite. if you don't, he/she probably won't think anything of it. so basically, thank-you cards for bonuses are completely unnecessary, but either way, it's your call because no harm will be done.

It is always good to be gracious. A bonus is an extra gift for a job well done. Although one maybe entitled to it, a person with a gracious heart always thank the giver for blessings received. It always shows good breeding.

considering it was a friggin $20 gift certificate to Food Lion, I would say no..

It really depends on the size of the bonus.

Mine was more of an insult considering how hard I work for him all year....

yes, of course. the owners of the store i work at gave us a bonus this year for the first time and we all signed a greeting card for them. i didn't talk to them or anything but i assume they appreciated it.

It depends. If everyone got it, or you earned it, just say thank you. But if it was out of generosity, give him the note.

it all depends on how the go about it's motivations. If it is the policy of the company to give bonuses, then it is needless doing that.Else it is necessary to give a thank you card.Jackson Udo

No, because I earned that bonus. Why should I thank them for recognizing it "now" as blatant as I've been in doing a good job in the year past? Huh?

Yeah, right. What bonus?

Of course you acknowledge it! A discreet 'thank - you' note will acknowledge it---not to do this would be thoughtless and rude.

the decision will depend on the person itself ,when even etiquette

rules can suggest its not necessary, logic, education, manners and

common sense, tells me is the right thing to do,even its a multi-corporation,or a small business, show your appreciation is some

gesture that is always welcome, independently if is a thank you note,a greeting card, personally said it,e-mailed or telephone call,

and the best is,you feel great about it!!!
Sujal
2007-01-03 00:40:49 UTC
Obviously we should give a thank you note for the bonus. Until and unless you recognize this act by your boss why will he recognize your good work????

He will think when they don't have the courtesy to say thank you why should I recognize their efforts??

sending a ty note is always a good idea. it lets them know that you didn't just "expect" it, but are truly thankful.
Texan Pete
2007-01-03 17:02:10 UTC
It is completely personal preference. It is not inappropriate for an employee to express thanks either verbally or in writing. Nor, should it be regarded as "a$$-kissing", it is simply a personal expression of thanks which is no one elses business.

Anna K

No, Like SNAP said, its part of your pay package.

Private companies usually have some sort of Christmas bonus. If you and your coworkers have busted your hides and earned the company uber profit, you should get a huge bonus.

Your boss thanks you for your work by giving you this extra dosh.

Its like you making or doing something for someone else for cash. Lets say gardening. You do the work. They like what you do and pay you money. You don't thank them for paying you. You just did a job. You gave them your expertise and labour in exchange for payment.

If it was you doing something nice for someone for no payment, and they gave you something like money or a gift at christmas to thank you for what you did all year, then I would say thanks at the time of the giving. If I felt so touched by what they gave, then I might give them a card, but in that instance to me it seems over the top.
Mrs. E
2007-01-03 11:25:47 UTC
A short "thank you" note is very appropriate. Just say, "thank you and the company for the gift, it was very appreciated", and leave it at that.

No, its a bad idea.

It seems like it would be getting too personal and would make things uncomfortable if you did that.

Saying thank you in person would work as previously mentioned by others.

It just doesn't seem professional to write a thank you note for a bonus.

"It should be noted, that a year end bonus, although it may be given at Christmas, is earned and not considered a holiday gift." from source link below on gift-giving at work.

I would especially if it was a sizeable bonus. My boss gave me & my coworkers a box of chocolate covered cookies and irish cream favoured coffee. It was a nice gesture.

Actually I do not think a boss would actually welcome a letter saying thanks. They are the ones showing thanks to you by money. All they see is the productivity of the employee rather than the actual kindness of the employee.

a thank you card goes a long way... despite the fact that you may have well earned this bonus, it is not a requirement.. a simple:

'dear so and so, thank you for thinking of me during the holidays; it sure came in handy' is a good way to say thanks without kissing a**.
