Every time no matter where I eat with family it's awk at the dinner table when know one talks, and all you hear is forks hitting the plates and people's mouths chewing. Can someone like give me a reason to why this is awk?

the French have an expression when that happens -- they say = ah an angel is passing by.

I assume you mean other than immediate family.
Firstly, you shouldn't hear them chewing. If they chew with their mouths open, feel free to excuse yourself from the room, or at least never look up.
Secondly, it is wrong to speak with your mouth full.
Third, if someone had something to say, it would be said.
Speaking just to break silence can sometimes be annoying. You will notice this, if there is no response. That means don't ask again.
I would prefer it if nobody spoke at my extended family meals.

It's because we no longer value silence. We've been conditioned to constant noise in our environment and we believe that people should be talking ALL the time that they're together. Nobody knows how to just sit and relax into the silence any more.
